Paradox & Vista 3

I've read a lot of negative experiences running Paradox on Vista.

I recently purchased a box with Vista Home Premium preinstalled, so that I could try to get an application I distribute to work with Vista.

After several false starts and some real issues getting the BDE to work, what I wound up with was:

Install an idapi32.cfg in a directory OUTSIDE the 'program files' directory. Edit it by right-clicking and electing to open with the BDE Administrator.

Set this as the default .cfg.

Include a -o switch, pointing to that .cfg file, in the command line in the icon that starts Paradox.

No more problems running Paradox, nor Paradox with my application.

There was no error on exit, either.

Just sharing, in case it may help save someone ELSE's hair.

Sorry, the details:

Paradox 9 Runtime sp3, vista home premium.

Haven't tried Full Paradox, yet.

Very nice. what about putting that in a faq?

I just installed x3 with no apparent problems, but as we all know, something will come up.

FAQ created.

From the FAQ:

Well, almost.

For Paradox 10 and later there is still the error on exiting Paradox. This can be taken care of with the code snippet below; you can execute this any time after starting Paradox EACH TIME; likely a startup script candidate.

Code:
sysinfo(dy)   ;dy.view()
s=dy["WindowsVersion"]
s=s.substr(1,1)      ;s.view()
if s="6" then  ;Vista
  Execute("TaskKill.exe /F /IM TaskEng.exe", No, ExeHidden)
endif

Ummmhhh...a what? is there a fairly simple way to explain this? How do I get to the command line of the icon......??? Or should I just live with it.

I have I think the latest Paradox version (which is essentially 10) on Vista HP, and cannot change the working directory. Suggestions?

Thanks.

Look up 'command line' in Help; it addresses the -o switch.

What does 'cannot change working directory' mean?

Do you get an error, or ??

cc8: Are you asking for help in STEALING Paradox X3? If so, why would you think that someone who has laid out their own money would be interested?
