I just had a problem with a client who recently changed to Windows 2000. They use an application I wrote in Paradox 7 and now have an inoperable OK button on a look-up dialog box. Also, the CANCEL and HELP buttons are invisible. They application is on a network.

Lance, you commented on a similar issue in a note dated about 2+ years ago.

Now that 2 years have passed since your message to Rich Wallach regarding the Application Compatibility Tool in the W2K Professional Resouce Kit, is there any updated info that you're aware of that would take care of this problem?

Thanks,

Stan

Stan,

Not really; other than knowing you need to reset the settings if you need to reinstall the software. If you're using a Runtime application and they've had to rebuild the Registry, add a different user, or otherwise modify the system, you'll need to re-run the Application Compatibility Tool and flag the appropriate .EXE as an NT 4 application. (By appropriate, I mean either the Paradox .EXE or the Runtime .EXE, depending on which your client is using, if not both.)

Just as a reminder, there's supposed to be a resource kit on the Win 2K CD. If installed, it's in

Programs Windows 2000 Support Tools Tools Application Compatibility Tool.

Once you've run it, you:

1. Enter or browse to the application .EXE you want to flag.
2. Select Windows NT4 SP5.
3. Place a checkmark in the Make above settings permanent.
4. Save your changes.

I don't have a machine currently set up to run Win 2K (I moved a little while ago and am still trying to get settled in. Lost three months of email during that little fiasco, but that's another story), but I understand that once the application is flagged properly, things perk up from there.

Hope this helps...

Stan,

FYI, I just stumbled over a couple more tidbits:

1) You can't install at all if you have more than 2GB free on the drive where your temp directory is.

To resolve this, create a new partition that contains 2GB or less, assign it a logical letter, and then set %TEMP% to it. Also make sure this is your private directory in BDE.

2) You have to run apcompat.exe afterwards. You'll find it on the Win2000 CD.

Note that thse probably apply to any 16-bit version of Paradox for Windows.

Hope this helps...
