After compiling the newest version of SAMBA on my SCO OpenServer v5.05 box and rebooting I an recieving a "Panic - exit - cannot exec /etc/init (PID 1)" message.

The system will not boot from the ERDs either. When I attempt to boot from the ERDs I get a "PANIC: k_trap" error. There appear to be several old SCO ta#s which refer specifically to these problems however I do not seem to be able to bring them up on Although the site states that you can search by TA# no TAs come up.

As I need to run a class with this machine in two days any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

"I get a "PANIC: k_trap" error. "

what is the k_trap error? the important number is a hex number with a bunch of zeros at the begining and a 1-E at the end. This number will point you in the general direction as to what is wrong. My suspicion is hardware and more specifically memory since you can't boot from diskette.

Thanks for your quick response.

"Kernal mode trap type 0x0000000E" is what is displayed when booted from the ERDs.

"0x00000009" is dispalyed when trying to boot from the HD.

To get to the ta query use the following url:

0x0E is a pretty generic trap, it says that it is memory but that memory could be ram, shared memory on an i/o card, or the cpu itself.

Tony has a good article on it at :

The 0x09 points to a co-processer fault.
A summary is available at :

So from the look of it something died co-incidently at the time you installed samba. OR
You had something step on your disk (i.e. missing /etc/init) but that doesn't explain the problem booting from floppy disk.
