Palm interferes with modem

I have a 105 and two cradles. One cradle is on an XP machine the other is on a W2K machine. One machine has an older version of Palm OS while the other has a newer version. Since I installed the cradles on the unused serial ports I have trouble with my modems on both machines. One both machine, after using the modem for a normal purpose and disconnecting, the next time I try to dial I get a message that the modem is in use. I cannot clear this problem until I log off and back on on the XP machine. On the 2K machine the problem got worse and I get a modem in use message all the time and cannot clear it.

I initially thought the Palm was yuppyish and did not use it but now I have grown to depend on it. So I did not uninstall it on either machine. I really want to use my palm but now I cannot use my fax program or PC Anywhere. I should note that one machine is my home computer (XP) while the other one is in my office (W2K)

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Easy:

With you right mouse button, click on your Hotsync Manager.
That's the little blue and red circle with arrows pointing at each other in your task tray by the clock.
Next, click on Setup. On the General Tab, select the second radio button;
"Available only when the Palm Desktop is running"
Click OK.

What's happening (until now) is that the Hotsync Manager takes control of your com port when it loads. It's waiting and watching for you to press the Hotsync button on your Palm.

By making this change, you are making your com port available to the modem except when you have the "Palm Desktop" software running.

So when you want to sync;
Start your "Palm Desktop" and then press your hotsync button like usual.

The other thing you can do is change your com port assignments.
This is out of the scope of this posting.

Thans for the input. I had already tried disabling the hotsync and still had the problem. The puzzle, to me, was that the system worked well at first and acted up later. The Palm was on Port 2, the modem Port 3. On one machine I installed port 4 and put the modem on it. So far it is working but it failed previously after is was used by Winfax or PC Anywhere. I will test it and let you know.

That would be another possibility, that you have some other software taking control of the com port. I didn't mention that because it sounded as though Hotsync was working ok.

But if you're able to hotsync ok and the modem is on a different port so no conflict there, perhaps you're in the wrong forum.

As long as your here I would make sure there is no other software taking control.
You mentioned PcAnyWhere and Fax software. Sometimes those other software packages don't give up the modem after you use them. Make sure you disable them and try again.

It doesn't sound like you're having any problem with your Palm though!!?
