If by purge do you mean doing a cleaning cycle? Why reluctant, that is the tool used to clean the printhead to recover weak or missing jets. If you are concerned about using too much ink, the jetfix snippet using more ink that a clean cycle. Also in my estimation the clean cycle will do a better job of recovering missing jets.

I'm reluctant because OEM inks cost 200 usd per box of three here !
Thanks for answering my question. Given that 8400 inks are more costly per printed page than those for the 8200, I can't help wondering if it is necessary to do a cleaning cycle for all the colours when just one jet is playing up.
Couldn't Xerox produce a programme that cleans only the problematic jets ?
