Hi,
I have a client who is so desparate to get his site on the web ASAP that he's even willing to pay to get it out there on the search engines. Any leads on a good reliable company/person who will do it for me? I thought perhaps if I found one good place and would give them all my clients, I could perhaps get some type of good deal with them...Just a thought. Main thing is to find someone who can do it. Everyone tells you that nothing is guaranteed with search engines but ppl. are getting their sites listed somehow so it's possible. I would like to find a co./person that's been doing it for years and knows what they're doing! Thanx in advance.

(I did try myself to submit my site to all the big search engines and now it's at least 4 months later and still nothing doing...)

Flasher, the SEO firms won't necessarily have any better luck.

If I was to start a site today and wanted to get traffic to it ASAP, and my site actually sold something, here's what I would do:

1) Submit to the best single topical category in the Open Directory Project at dmoz.org - inclusion can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 years, so you might as well start now.

1A) Submit to the most appropriate Regional category at dmoz.org - often, inclusion in the Regional area doesn't take as long. Only do this step if the site/business has some regional relevancy.

2) Pay about $50 to PositionTech to get my home page and one or two others spidered and included in Inktomi.

3) If you're really desparate, try step #2 with AltaVista.

4) Setup and Overture account and determine which keywords/keyphrases will get you relevant traffic, but which won't cost a whole lot (bids start at 5 cents). There are quite a few words/phrases still at the 5 cents level.

5) Search for similar terms on Google and find sites that might be allies of your clients. Then politely request a link. DO NOT submit to "free for all" links pages and the like - only sites that are relavent to yours, and only sites that do not have a gazillion-listing link farm.

Using steps 1, 2, and 5 I've gotten new sites into the first page of Google within 6 weeks. Steps 3 and 4 are for the intervening time.

Foxdev,

DO NOT submit to "free for all" links pages and the like - only sites that are relavent to yours, and only sites that do not have a gazillion-listing link farm.

I have never ever seen a negative effect with submitting to FFA pages and have actually increased the listings for some sites by doing this. I have however seen loads of places saying not to do this, but most of them do it themselves.

Have you had any negative effects doing this?

Wullie

Hi Foxdev,
Thanx for your detailed instructions. couple of questions to make sure I got it straight:

1)For #4, what website is that? what's the url to get this overture account?

2) Does position tech submit your site to google?

3)what did you mean in #5 by: ---Search for similar terms on Google--- similar to #4?

And finally,
4)I just noticed that although I separated my keywords with commas, I had a space between each comma and the following word. I also only had the description and keyword meta tags but not the author.. language and other meta tags. would any of these be a reason why dmoz would have left out my site?

Thank you very much.

Are you saying I should put the address in the key words tag?

Wullie: I have never ever seen a negative effect with submitting to FFA pages

OK, you've got me...I never have personally experienced it, but I've never submitted to those sorts of places.

But I've read quite a few reports from the field that Google has penalized (either through a drop in Page Rank or a +X penalty in the results) sites that participate heavily in what are being termed "bad neighborhoods". The reports are too many and too widespread (new and old sites alike) to be ignored.

Also, from Google's "why does my page not appear in Google" info: setting up pages/links with the sole purpose of fooling search engines may result in permanent removal from our index. It's up to our interpretation what Google means by "fooling search engines".

flasher: Overture (formerly GoTo) can be found at . I believe there may be a $25 account opening minimum. Its a good way to get traffic in quick.

PositionTech is an inclusion partner of Inktomi, so opening a PositionTech account and paying for one or more pages to be spidered and included will get you into the Inktomi index, which in turn is used by MSN, AOL (for now), and others. You pay for each page; paying for your index page will not guarantee inclusion of any other page other than that one. But a few bucks here will get your main page or two in there within a week.

On my #5 "search for similar terms on Google and find sites...", I could have written that a bit better.

Keep in mind that Google (and reportedly a few others, but Google mostly) places a high degree of importance on the "authority" of a page; this authority is assumed by the number and quality of links pointing to a given page. This, plus some eye of newt, is what goes into making up Google's Page Rank.

Therefore, having quality (i.e. relevant) links to you are important. Use Google (or your favorite SE) to find other sites that have complementary content, and request a link.

For example, if you sell baklava and jalaybee then you might ask sites that sell chocolates or candy-making supplies to link to you. Even sites that also sell similar items would be great, if they agree.

thanx for clarifying . Also, those free for all pages you are discussing with wullie, are you referring to sites like quickregister.net where they submit your site for free to all the search engines? someone just told me that all I have to do is use that site and I'm set. something tells me that won't work!

No, submission services are not the same as "free for all" (FFA) links pages.

Many FFA pages act like a guestbook, where you add in a link to your site pretty much automatically.

I don't want to imply there is anything wrong with using an automated submission service; I just wouldn't pay any money to use one. If you have the budget, the need, and don't have the time, engaging the services of a reputable and experienced search engine optimization specialist might be worthwhile. Good results take time, though.

thanx very much for all your help. Much appreciated!

Well I've only submitted mine to the freebies... and our web turns up all over the place.
