Hi Guys,

I have searched the forum and see that external loud speaker paging is not as clear cut as it should be.

Here's what I have;

IP Office 500 R5
DS ports
Analog station ports
Viking CPA-7B paging module (setup sheet:
I configured an analog extension port as a "Paging Speaker", I then set the Viking paging module to RING-TRIP (using installation option A), connected the phone line from the analog port to the paging input on the Viking. Adjusted the RING TRIP Time OUt Port. I then programmed a soft button; labeled it LoudPage, Code: ADVANCED-->DIAL-->DialPaging, and the action data as Extn172 (172 is the analog extension port the paging module is plugged in to).

I can't get it to work. If I moved the switch on the viking to "TRUNK /PAGING PORT" I get a busy signal. If I go to TRIP RING I push the button, it shows as connected to Extn172, but nothing comes out of the loud speaker.

Honestly, when and how I would get a busy signal could have been caused by a number of reasons.

Does anyone have any experience with the Viking CPA-7B? Am I doing it wrong?

I did read another post on here that referenced Avaya Tek Tip #197 that said that UPAMs connected to an analog station port needs to be configured as IVR and NOT "Paging Speaker". The poster also said to NOT use DIAL-->DialPaging, but instead use DIAL-->DialExtension

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

There have been some times when you may need to set the Port to IVR to get it to work properly. you can also try making your short code me dial EXT and see if that helps.

I had to go off hook then power down the IPO while still off hook (with a butt set) then connect the paging system to the port. It wouldn't work before I did this but worked great afterwards.

So let me see if I understand this... could i take a regular analog phone, plug it in to the port and lift the handset and set it aside, then power off the IPO, connect the paging system, then power the IPO back up?

What happens the next time the IPO gets rebooted or power cycled?

No lift the hand set power don then power back up while the handset is still off hook once the IPO is back up connect the paging system.

That ones going in the archive :)

So?

no change I have rebooted that unit a dozen times or more since, I got that fix from Avaya TS

I've also done it the way teletechman describes and it does work for whatever reason. Rebooting the system doesn't seem to effect it.

Nice. * for you.

Wow - quite an amazing sequence. This is pretty timely advice for me as well. Another star, and thanks for the contribution.

as far as I know it always was like that, without the 600 ohm loop the paging port does not activate. This is the way Avaya told us when release 1.3 was current and I have never done it any different since. I was always under the impression that this is the ONLY way to get paging working and actually always have a few 600 ohm resistors with an RJ45 on it so that I can activate paging before hooking it up and without having to reboot the system again. All my colleagues have the same stuff on the truck for that reason.
But one learns something new every day with IP office it seems.

It may be standard practice since 1.3 but as Avaya have not documented it anywhere that I know of, no-one knows about it :)

Thanks for all the help. I got it working.

I called viking and they suggested that the paging module should be set to "trunk/paging port" mode if I was to configure the analog extension on the IPO to "Paging Speaker". What they also recommended I do was jumper terminals 5 and 7 on the paging module (see my original post for a link to the PDF document on the paging module).

I believe that was the trick because shortly after it started working. I say *think* because I was trying so many different things (even tried using an available trunk port). I honestly can't remember what sequence of events made the whole thing work. I can definitely tell you the final step that finally made it work - I actually plugged the paging module into the analog port. Yeah. During my troubleshooting (and the whole plugging in of an analog phone, taking it off hook, reboot etc etc, NUMEROUS times), at some point I forgot to plug the paging module back in. I know, I'm an idiot.

Anyway, so in summary, I configured an analog port to "speaker paging", created a user for that extension called "SpkrPaging", I programmed a soft button on all phones called "Loud Page" with Action "Advanced--->Dial--->DialPaging" and Action Data of "172 SpkrPage" (172 is the analog extension that the Paging module is plugged in to).

On the paging module, it was set to "Trunk/Paging Port" mode (since the paging module sees the analog extension as a paging port) and shorted terminals 5 and 7, which I believe sets the paging module to always page (as opposed to needing an interrupt - I think anyways), fially the Ring Trip Time Out Pot was set to Max. The 4 speakers were wired in parallel and connected to the speaker terminals on the paging module.

That's it. Oh, and during this process I upgraded the IPO to R5, hoping that would make things work, but the previous software release (4.1.17) wasn't the issue in this case.

i really don't know why Avaya doesn't sell, or at least re-sell paging systems that it has determined to be fully compatible with its systems. It would make everybone's life so much easier.

So once again, thanks to all for your help.

Paging has 2 interfaces on an extension port and one interface on a line port, low and high impedance on extensions ( different systems have different values for that but all around 600 Ohm or 10 kOhm) and low impedance on a line port (Ok sometimes you need to introduce voltage to that interface some systems provide their own voltage) nothing else.
I have not encountered a paging system that I could not make work, you might need a WMT1A (matching transformer) but then it will work.
Line hookup with or without external voltage (always low impedance because that is what line ports are) done.
It took me a bit to find this out (about 3-5 years really to get to that conclusion) and doing it for years after that certainly helps with it but it really is that simple.
I hope I don't sound like a smart ass with that, if I do excuse me it is not meant that way, just to clarify paging hookups and maybe someone can use it on a bad day and it will help ease the pain for them.

It is usually always necessery to have a analog port electrically separated from the paging equipment.
This can be done best with a 600 ohm 1:1 transformer.
