I've been monitoring PF usage as reflected in task manager performance section. Its starts out at about 140 MB, but slowly continuously creeps up and up until it is so large I get a low vitrual memory warning, & the system freezes. It makes no difference whether or not i have any applications open or whether any have been opened at all. I don't see anything in the processes section of task manager that could be using memory other that what seem windors system files.

Have a look at your settings under system properties. Right click My Computer/Properties/Advanced/performance Settings/Advanced(again). For what it is worth my computer is set for best program performance and a page file of initial 384mb to max of 768mb. Have a look at this site for cutting back on some unrequired services.
