I am very new to everything web design. I followed this tutorial for setting up coldfusion developer edition on my pc and using apache as my staging server. Problem is, if I put in the site address...localhost etc, it gives me an error. If i go to my dreamweaver file in my apache folder, it gives me a pop up box asking if I want to open or save my dreamweaver .cfm file. It then opens, but in dreamweaver as a cfm file, not in internet explorer. I followed the steps as outlined in the tutorial. I have coldfusion installed and running. At work, I can type in the address in explorer and it comes up. I added my Folder "Mayfield" into my HTDOCS folder under apache in programs. My homepage as set up with apache by default is " No matter how I type in my path, it still gives me an error. My Coldfusion administrator page comes up fine. If I put any other personally created CFM file in the "CFIDE/Administrator" folder created by Coldfusion in my HTDOCS folder, and replace the name of the original CFM file with the name of my own in the same directory, mine gives an error. Again, this is when two CFM files are in the same directory. The one installed by coldfusion works, mine doesn't. I changed the name in the path exactly to match. I'm trying to do some work at home for something that my boss set up at work. He knows his stuff, but doesn't have the time to really show me how to do things. I just get tidbits here and there and am left to fill in the gaps. With web design, it seems these are pretty huge gaps. He wants such and such done, and I can't view the site on my computer. All I can do is open up the pages in dreamweaver. This view rarely lines up with what I would see on a live page in explorer. Any advice or links to tutorials explaining how to fix my problem would be great!

Four months later, I wonder if you ever got around to fixing this problem.

I can offer you a couple of tips:

1. Make sure apache server (HTTPD) is running. This is best installed as a service so that it starts automatically. I recommend installing WAMP

2. Add virtual directory in apache so that you can define a directory where you keep your CFM pages.

Once you have created your virtual directory, you should be able to browse your CFM pages by typing:

I am not sure if you need to load modules in apache for it to serve CFM pages (I am looking into that right now - So, if you know the answer to this, please let me know).
