PageMaker: Merging more than 1 record

Cannot seem to merge more than one record in PageMaker. Am trying to do 4 on a page postcards. Am able to select Manual Layout and have tried column / row gutter figures (guessing on those) to no avail. I am not clear on what is required as far as column/row figures, are these dependent on the original data fields or the document itself? All the literature/tips I have found end at "enter column/row gutters." Not sure what this entails. Any help would be appreciated.
