I have spent the last week asking this same question around the world and have had little in the way of a definative answer !

We use PM 6.52 on a PC running Win XP. This is fine for designing but when we Postscript, the film we get back doesn't have proper dots ... sort of "flicks" and it is unprintable. The very same file Postscripted on our Win 98 machine comes out beautifully.

We have all the most recent PPD's. I am aware that PM6.52 isn't officially supported on Win XP.

So far the only answer is "Win XP is useless for PS with PM".

We are a small company and can't afford to upgrade to ID. Backgrading to Win 2000 is very expensive (despite owning an XP pro liscence - nice one microsoft!) So is our only answer downgrading the OS to Win 98 - or can we solve this XP / postscript gremlin ?

Thanks for any advice !

Hi, oldstumpy,

I go along with everything you say, and offer two ways forward:

1. As you seem willing to reformat your PC, and PM6.52 is known to run smoothly on WinXP, why don't you wipe your hard drive and do a fresh re-install of WinXP, add the updates and then install PM6.5?

2. Upgrade to PM7 for £65/€95.00 + Delivery and VAT

Note that the Adobe InDesign CS PageMaker Edition is £289.00/€409.00 + Free Delivery and VAT

Are you saying that PM 6.52 CAN run smoothly on WinXP ?

Everything I have been told suggests that I will never get PM 6.52 running properly on WinXP. Do you think that the OS itself is corrupted ?

I might try a trial version of PM7 and see if that actually works ...

thanks for your reply

Hi, oldstumpy,

> Are you saying that PM 6.52 CAN run smoothly on WinXP ?

Yes, it can. But exctly what the recipe is for making it happen is not clear. It's hit or miss.

That's why I suggested a fresh re-install of WinXP. There's no guarantees, but it removes a few unknowns like other applications, anti-virus and utilties.

> Do you think that the OS itself is corrupted ?

I doubt it. I'm no fan of WinXP but judging by my children's PCs, it's very solid with a lot of self correcting diagnostic checks.

Good idea! Here's the link (65Mb):

You can also try InDesign (81Mb):

I would suggest the best option is at least an upgrade to PM7. According to Adobe at this link: PageMaker 6.5x, however, may not meet your expectations in Windows XP, since it was released prior to Windows XP and was not developed for this operating system.
