A client wants PageMaker 4.0 installed on two Windows 98 and one Windows 98 SE worstations. Install is fine until after disk 4 of 5. After disk 4 installs error appears. "Error carrying out the installation. Internal error: Bad file position. 4646:16401" If I select continue it appears as though PM 4.0 installed but when I click on the icon to start the program it says the file ALDWPLS.DLL is missing. We installed the same software to another Windows 98SE computer and installation went fine. If anyone has a solution to this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Jenn

First, I would not really recommend running PM4.0 (or anything earlier than 6.5)on a W98 system, that version was developed years before 98 was even a twinkle in Bill gate's eyes. Pm6.5 was developed for 98, which is a 32 bit operating system, Pm4.0 if I remember correctly predates even the 16-bit OS and will perform very shakily.

However, if you insist on doing this you need to do a complete uninstall, including cleaning out the registry manually. Delete all temp files, defrag & scan disk, reboot, then attempt a reinstall. Assuming the set-up disks have not become corrupt, you should have good luck. The big concern is that the disk(s) are corrupt, in which case you have no option but to upgrade.

hope this helps When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
