pageindex .pagenumbers..checkout

I need to get the next and previous buttons working and the correct page no in place of xxxx's. I am a cf newbie. i heard there is a pageindex function but can't find any details. Help please!!!

this is page XX of XXX pages next previous

also if anyone knows how to add items to a basket in a chedckout page....think i've bitten off more than i can chew!!!!!!
