Page #'s in Word not printing properly.....

Here's the situation:

I created a template in Word and in the footer of that template. I have inserted 'Page X of Y' in the footer, which displays the page numbers in the format '3 of 12', for example.

Here's the problem:

The page numbers appear fine on the document on the screen, but when printed (or a .pdf is created for that matter), The page numbers appear as '1 of 1' on the first page, 2 of 2' on the second page, etc... I can't seem to figure out what this problem is. Any ideas?

Turn off Background printing under Tools-Options-Print tab.

I tried that and unfortunately it has not worked. I am pretty puzzled on this one. Again, it's only when printing or making a .pdf file. Any other ideas?
