How do I set automatic page numbering, most likely from a master page. Thanks.

The help file explains this.

Right-click in a text frame and choose to insert a special character, in this case... a page number.

For some reason that didn't work. Is the special NOT supposed to go the master page? Im switching from quark and the overall proccess of things seem wierd to me.

Yes, you would ideally be doing this on a master page.

Sorry about that, It turned out to be some rookie mistake. Thanks for the help. Now I just need to make it so the page numbering doesn't count the cover or table of contents pages.

You can create different numbering sections in the page palette.
