Hello everyone,

I just can't seem to solve this problem on my own. I am writing a term paper example for my students. I want the paper to display all the characteristics of the Turabian Style for writing Term Papers. According to this style, page numbering for the body is different from page numbering for the preamble section of the document (the title page, index, abstract, etc). That section of the document must have small roman numerals for pages and they should all be at the bottom center of each page.

The main body of the paper must have arabic numbers and the location of these must change from top right of page to bottom center of page depending on whether the page is the start of a main section. The start of Main sections must have the page number at the bottom and the rest of the document at the top.

I have never been able to pull this off with MS Word. I get the first section working correctly and I even get the main body to use arabic numerals. But I can't get the main body to shift from top to bottom depending on whether the page is the start of a main section. I have separated the first section from the second with a section break. When I set the main body's layout option to "Different First Page" and then try to create a page number at the top for the first page and then one at the bottom for the second page, it also changes the preamble section to do the same thing, which it should not do. In the preamble section, all page numbers must be at the bottom of the page. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I am using MS Word 2003.

Have you used 'Section Break'. This does allow you to change the headers and footers - though I've always found it awkward.

I do have a Section Break (Next Page) between the two Sections but to no avail. This allows me to use Roman Numbers for one section and Arabic for the other, but it does not allow me to make the change in where the footer should be placed. When I change that in the second section, the first section follows suit.
