Page is askew after fixing, why?

Hi, folks!

Sometime ago I made the mistake of purchasing a Flash Template from TemplateMonster.Com: and, what I paid for was a virutal mess of scripting. I have been months trying to fix everything. I recently completed chaning everything to small letters, adding "#" where there were none in the bgcolor="#" script, placing "alt=""" tags where there were none, and placing "" where there were none. (See the example here: <TABLE WIDTH=100% height="100%" BORDER=0 CELLPADDING=0 CELLSPACING=0 bgcolor="FFFFFF">.)

Now my home page -- is all askew. It nakes it even worse if I add the following <!DOCTYPE> to the page:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "
I have to omit the latter script?!?

My question to all of you is, "How do I fix these problems?" In addition, the W3C HTML Validator doesn't recognize the following scripts either: "td colspan="5" background="images/bgtop1.gif" height="29" width="606">"

What exactly is wrong with the page? It looks OK to me.

Maybe you just been looking at it for too long and your eyes are askew?

I had to revert back to the poorly written script because it was so badly screwed up. Everything was way off, such as the tables and what not. Here is the script, if you want to see how tbadly the template was written. It won't even validate.

The reason that a full doctype makes your page go askew is that it causes the browser to render in "standards compliant" mode instead of "quirks" mode. Somewhere in that page there's coding that depends on the old-fashioned way of doing things, you'll need to find and fix it. The benefit of doing so will be to minimise potential cross-browser problems, though frankly it already seems to look OK in Firefox.

You could try running it through the HTML Tidy program at - that'll handle the text case and missing quotes.

Then, I'm afraid it's a case of iterating through the document, fixing validation errors one-by-one. It'll do a lot of complaining about attributes whose job can be done in CSS, you can bone up on what's valid at .

OK,

I went vadifate the page(s) with HTML Tidy (in HTML Kit), like you suggested. In MSIE it rendered some of the text in "#000000" instead of white; and, some of the Left-Margins were off. It did, however, render almost perfect in FireFox.

Again, however, when i tried to validate the code again it showed me a bunch of the following errors:

Of cource these same errors began on Line #125: Twelve in all. At one point it stated that it couldn't parse.

HTML Tidy and the validator are automated tools. Since, as you point out, the code they're working on is a mess, it'll sometimes be more of a mess than they can cope with.

That said, when I run the version that you've currently got online through Tidy, it seems to cope with it OK albeit with 61 warnings. The resulting file could be parsed OK through the W3C validator (with 37 validation errors).

Even when/if you've got it validating, you've still got plenty of work on your hands stripping out <font> tags and inline style attributes to make an external style sheet. Whoever wrote that page clearly didn't "get it" about what you can (and should) do with CSS to control the appearance of your pages.
