have windows 2000, and the page file always shows 20 mb, i increase it in the performance setting say 700 min 900 max and then restart, it still shows 20 mb after that and the error that of virtual memory not enough.

what can i do

its known that certain intel chipsets can cause that happen, but i've only seen it myself with windows xp systems so far only. if you do have an intel chipest you might want to try downloading the intel application accelerator which has corrected the problem a number of times for me on different machines. its available at:

(in some cases removing it if its already installed, corrects the problem).

i remember once also a certain problematic driver loaded from \system32\drivers prevents the paging file from being created properly. if you remove it, it goes away..the task is finding the one. if thats the case theres software out there you can dl that can report everything that loads on startup to make it easier.

maybe that will help if logging in as power user or administrator won't work.

spyser,

Can you elaborate a little?? Do you know any names??? I would be very interested if these can do as you say. I would like to know EXACTLY what I have starting when I boot my PC as I liek to have total control. I have not seen anything like you mention.

sorry, i guess i should of been more specific in my post, i didn't think it'd be necessary. but since you requested...
i've used the built in monitor in windows 2000, the driver verifier manager which is started by start>run>verifier once you're there go to the settings tab to see whats loaded and even verify a particular driver. or you could also use a utility called taskinfo, which can do the same thing (i never had to use it though)..its available at:

so check that out....

spyser,

I first want to say, thanks.

But as I imagined, this is not what I was looking for.....I am really looking for a utility that will allow me to see everything startup during startup....

I am really trying to find a trojan/popup/virus/webaddons like Gator, BonzaiBuddy, etc that are "install" onto your machine and run virtually silently.

I am sick and tired of all the "crap" you now pick up while on the interent and I am trying to find some ways to help control it....

The programs you mentioned above do a pretty good job, but I know they are not showing me everything.....

Again....thanks. Please remember to give helpful posts the stars they deserve! This makes the post more visible to others in need! [thumbsup2]

Have you tried Ad-aware (to find and remove such stuff)?

I run it about once a week.......but thanks.

Again, I think I have a pretty good grasp on all the stuff, but I would like a utility that would allow me to "view" all the startup and background processes....

Perhaps the utility would "simulate" a boot process and log all the process and threads (including what files and reg keys they start from, etc.) that begin..... Please remember to give helpful posts the stars they deserve! This makes the post more visible to others in need! [thumbsup2]
