Don't know if this is software or hardware problem and don't know if there is an easy answer {other than don't do that [SURPRISE]} but I'll ask anyway.

I have a laptop running Win-XP-PRO, SP1 and when I disconnect my USB printer, I sometimes get page fault in non paged area. Any idea? use 'safely remove hardware' first? [nosmiley]

thanks for any ideas.

A selection of things to look at.

HP and Compaq PCs - Resolving Illegal Operation and Invalid Page Fault Errors

822603 - Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update

Going to SP2 might help?

Try removing the printer and re-installing it. You may also want to contact the device manufacturer to obtain the most recent drivers for your printer.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thanks for the response linney;
I'll start with reinstalling the printer and then work my way down the list. I looked at your list of articles and none of them jumped out and said 'take me', so i'll work on them.

I'm leary RE: SP2. I've read where it creates problems with user programs and i cannot afford to not do my work.
update to follow.
thanks again,

SP2 was such a major update and probably included many USB amendments and updates. It is a shame you are wary of it but that is your right. Most people don't have any problems with it nowadays, and it has been released for a couple of years now too. All the later XP systems have it pre-installed, posts re problems concerning SP2 are a rarity in this forum but not unknown.

Slipstreaming a ServicePack may be a way to go if you are worried about installing it separately.

It sounds like your USB problem is an intermittent fault, is that correct? If so it may be a devil to fix.

yes USB is an intermittent problem and I can live with it as it usually happens when we are closing up shop... but it'd be nice if that didn't happen. [:p]

So, can I assume [bad thing to do] that the SP2 that is released today is different/upgraded from the SP2 that was originally released? And therefore there are less problems with it?

Just off the top of my head there has been 60 - 70 updates made to XP SP2 since August 2004, some of those were probably for IE and other problems, but I think it is fair to say there have been many changes to SP2.

so dumping the sp2 that i d/l'd last year, getting a fresh d/l of sp2, and then installing the new sp2 would be in order. i'll give it a shot next week after my current work is done. ty

I doubt that SP2 from last year is any different from a fresh download this year? It is the later updates released via Windows Update that may make the difference.
