I am using Win XP. I have tried a few programs for packet writing. Using File CD 2.0, this did not see any of my drives with CDRWs. RecordNow DX saw all the drives, but does support packet writing. B's Gold and Clip 3.30 only saw one one drive but then said it could not run with other apps running. Nothing was running. What is going on? What programs should I shut down? Has anyone tried Roxio Driect CD 5.3? Should I delete some of the packet programs before trying another one?

You should most definitely only have one packet writing program installed at any one time. Note that as most of them start automatically with Windows you will have to close them by using Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up the Task Manager as they may not uninstall properly while they are running and an incomplete uninstall could leave you with all sorts of problems, including being unable to access any CD drives at all. In Task Manager look under both the Applications and Processes tabs.
As to which is the best, I have had the best results with Nero InCD I do not think Direct CD will run under XP and I have no knowledge of the others. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

Good post mulga....
but I thought direct cd worked on XP...using version
5.x or higher? Kimber

The more I learn,I realize how much more there is to know!

FWIW, Direct CD 5.x will run on XP with the appropriate patch(es) from Roxio's website. I prefer Nero's InCD also.

I was not sure about the latest version of Direct CD, thanks for the update guys. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

I have been using DirectCD 5.3.2.34 for some time now with WinXP Pro with no problems. I agree that you should not have two packet writing programs installed at one time. DirectCD 5.3.2.34 will also work with DVD+RW, by the way.
