I've got a Lantronix X-port (an RS232 to ethernet gizmo) on a small LAN it shares with a few PCs. Sometimes it does not respond to inbound traffic directed to it from the internet even though I have the modem/router setup to forward to its unique port no.

I tried running WireShark on one of the PCs but it only picks up broadcast traffic. I can remove the X-port & rejig the WireShark PC to the X-port local IP & get outside packets destined for the X-port that way. But the problem is intermittent so I still don't know if the X-port would have responded if it where there.

What I really want is a way to sniff for packets to & from the X-port when it's connected. I tied to piggy back WireShark across just the Rx+/Rx- wires in the cable to the x-port to evesdrop on inbound packets but that won't work either.

Other than setting up a server with WireShark is there anyway to sniff out the X-port only traffic?

We've had dealings with those before, although we've not experienced issues with them.

Have you got any hubs? You could throw one into the mix and then plug your monitoring device into it. You'd see all traffic then.
