I really like the ease of use of the packet generator function inside of Sniffer Portable. Does any one know of a freeware/shareware software which does something similiar? That is ... the ability to take a .CAP file and shoot it out the Ethernet port? Thanks.
I remember Microsoft's Netmon being able to transmit packets, but I have to confess I haven't used it in a while. The only trick would e converting NAI's CAP to Microsoft's CAP, and you can do that with Ethereal.
Try to get your hands on the old DOS sniffer software. Save you tracefiles as .ENC and use the DOS sniffer. It is officially end of life software and no longer supperted by NAI, so probably there should be some versions out there.
The last DOS ethernet version i am aware of is 5.5. DOS Sniffer also has the advantage to send out "Bad" packages like CRC's runts and so, while the Windows based sniffer is not albe to do this.

One thing I liked about transmitting with the old DOS Sniffer was that it actually transmitted the packets with the same interframe gap that was in the trace file. One of the problems I have run into with the new GUI transmit facitility is that it does not come anywhere close to the original interframe gap.
Also it has some problems transmitting at above %17 percent utilization. It all depends on what you are trying to do.
Fortunat is right. You can use NetMon to transmit, however you must have the full SMS version of the analyzer to do this.
