Hi All
I'm trying (over the 'phone) to sort out a problem with my MD's sister's Packard Bell. I'm in the UK, she lives in Spain but has an english Packard Bell imedia 4716.

After re-installing XP (long story before I got involved) the modem no longer works and she has no idea where her original CD's are.

PB's site is useless, so do any of you good people have a PB4716 and can tell me the model and ref. for the modem please so I can get drivers ?

Thanks in anticipation
John

I've had a few older modems that just don't work under XP. With modems so cheap, I'd just avoid the Packard Bell hassle and put a new one in.

My understanding was:

1) He is trying to do this over the phone from the UK to
Spain.
2) It worked with XP until a re-install.

3) It's not that old of a PC.

4) According to the PB site, the link I provided should be
the correct driver.

5) LordGarsdale hasn't responded yet.

Hi Jim
I've downloaded the driver you suggested in your link and uploaded it to a freebie site that holds files 'for collection'. She'll need to pop in to her local internet cafe in Alicante to download it and install it. Far less tech for her than using the link herself as this way she just clicks on a link in her hotmail email and down it comes.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep you informed of progress.
I was unsure of the cnr type modem as the error message, I'm now told, is driver missing for Simple PCI Comms Device.
Is the cnr connector on the PCI circuitry ?

John

There should be a shorter slot in the first position (usually) on the motherboard beside the first PCI slot. That is the cnr (or amr) slot. I think it would still show up in software as a Simple PCI Comms Device before the driver is installed.

Jim

did this even help her? I'm having the same problem with a compaq and a lucent modem, but the driver is all set, it's the com ports that are messed up, the modem is on com3 but the computer only shows com1 in the device manager

Hi Keith
No reply from Spain yet - she hasn't phoned from the internet cafe so I assume she's using it. I'll have to 'phone her (in works time, of course) to find out the current position.
John

Hi Jim
The PB cnr modem driver you pointed to has worked. She has ASSUMED that since she hadn't come back to me with the problem, then I would know it was all OK !!!!! Instead of studying for a masters in Computing Science, I think I'll change it to Mental Telepathy, got to be more use.

Keith - remember the 'good old days' with windows when you put the modem on com1 and the mouse on com3, after enabling com3 in the BIOS. - What goes round comes round.

I'm glad that fixed it. Thanks for the update.

Jim
