after patch installing on my p5 HMC if have fsck failed at boot.

Root password is needed to run fsck and repair manualy.

After a call to IBM support the only solution is to reinstall and restore the HMC.

Support center said me when HMC is not running they can't generate a one day root password.

I know durring the installation default root password is passw0rd but it seems to be changed after.

Does any of you have an idea to bypass root password and run fsck or maybe a magic password ???

try doing a linux rescue boot (not sure what filesystem the kernel needs to be...I assume ext2/ext3 or even JFS), and mount the root file system.

Then run "passwd root"

I am not 100% sure if that will work.

Oh now the HMC is repaired.

After IBM inspector said: "you've just to reinstall...", i thought ok let's go man take a linux live CD and go.

Booted on my live CD
fsck on /dev/hdba5
fix all errors
dont touch to X on the root line in /etc/passwd )

reboot and the show must go on.

My HMC is back now

Do it your self seems to be the best solution with those types of problems...

I would restore from MY latest HMC recovery media (this would be the last version you had working).

We've had this a few times and found that if we used the hscroot password for root, it let us in. (And it wasn't the default password either)
