Corel Office (Pro) 12 is obviously in the pipeline. Does anyone know what the plans for Paradox will be? Re lease the program, or are they going to sell it, or maybe just drop it?

jlockley,

I've seen the same announcements and am currently trying to uncover that information.

I strongly suspect that Paradox will be part of the Professional edition, but that any changes will be limited at best. This is only a guess, but one based on earlier comments and the recent structural changes at Corel.

Personally, I would like to see a stronger commitment, but I do believe that they'll still provide some support.

If I hear otherwise (outside of an NDA), I will post accordingly.

Hope this helps...

Out of interest where do you find these 'announcements' am considering myself whether there is any merit in moving from version 9.

According to Richard Carriere, chief strategist for Corel's Office Productivity business, "Paradox does not currently generate sufficient revenues to warrant further investments in development at this time."

For the full story, please see
So, while this isn't necessarily good news, it seems they're at least content to let things ride for a time.

As far as upgrading from Paradox 9 goes, I'd consider it for a few reasons:

-- SP4 for Paradox 9 was only released as a CD update. This contained some critical fixes related to printing and memory.

-- P10 added stringlists, which can greatly reduce the code needed for internal events like keyPhysical, menuAction, action, and other events.

-- To demonstrate that there still is interest in Paradox. For this to work, though, people need to tell Corel that they rely on the package.

Bystander: as far as finding these announcements, I follow several different online sources devoted to Paradox, including WPU's forum, the newsgroups at and several others. With google and other resources, it's fairly easy to chase down news these days.

Hope this helps...

One of the chefs I placed is very tech inclined and he mentioned it. I then checked the web site.

As for upgrading, I'd say not past 10 if you are a small business, unless Corel returns to selling Paradox Bundled (or, could it be?? As a separate application? Nah..never) and not "leasing" it with a one year use permit, as is currently the case. I have ten, and as a user rather than a programmer, I almost prefer 8.

Many thanks Lance and Jlockley.

"one year use permit" I feel I have now heard it all. Wonders will never cease.
