OWA slow accross domains

We have 2 domains. Domain A is where most users and 2 servers are located. Domain B is where the exchange server and a few clients are located. OWA is fast in domain B but users in domain A trying to access OWA on the exchange server are quite slow. The domains are trusted. Also, users in domain A must specify an ip address to get to the exchange server, while those in doamin A can use the dns name. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this?

XP clients.

why do the clients have to use an IP address? are they using a different DNS server? put a name record in their dns server for the exchange server.
