Background: I have two Exch. 5.5SP4 servers, one running on NT4SP6a, one running on W2KSP3. Each is running OWA. Our users are in multiple NT domains (we aren't Active Directory yet). Abruptly, for no reason I could determine, OWA stopped authenticating each other's users; in other words, users have to actually put in the URL of the server on which their mailbox resides. If they try to go to the OWA on the other server, they get "Unable to get inbox." Both servers are in the same site, using the same directory. Both servers have all three authentication methods selected, and turning off the NTFS authentication doesn't seem to help.
This is a colossal PITA, as I have a firewall port open specifically for OWA, and I've now had to tell the users on the second server to use a different port address to get in, as the first one won't authenticate users whose mailboxes are on the second one. I had to open another firewall port, which I did not want to do.
Why would these servers stop authenticating one another's users?
