OWA and Active Sync over https

I have an exchange 2003 server sp2 on win 2003. As of right now, users access OWA via http and phones sync with active sync via httpS. Everything works fine with this config. However I am trying to force OWA users to use https, but when I do this Active sync on the phones fail. You recieve a generic error message.

This only happens when I require https on the default web site. Has anyone successfully setup this same config???

I have read a few articles about creating a new virtual directory for oma. I'm not sure this is the right path to take.
