I have a server running Win 2000 server. upon installing an exsisting program on a new workstation computer, the database file on the server was overwritten by the new install. I NEED the old DB file, but can't find a back up of it. Can something like that be un-deleted? The only thing that I thought might save me is the tape back-up on the system, but it is very old & we're not sure if it was backing up daily. Is there any way to un-delete the lost file? I'm afraid to even try using the tape system on the server to restore whatever is on the tapes & that it might crash the whole thing, so is there any way I could take the tape to someone to get the information off of the tapes if there is any? The tapes are Travan 20 tapes that go in a Seagate drive. I am in HUGE trouble here!!

The file is toast if it has been overwritten. You can restore the file from the tape to a different location. Why would the tape crash the server?

I'm just afraid that if I restore anything on the tape that might not be a recent backup, that I might overwrite something else with old files. When I try to read the tape with the backup software it won't read it.

Well if you cannot read the tape then the point about restoring is moot. It the tape media is bad then there is nothing that can be done.
