I was in the process of downloading firmware on a phone when my PuTTY Configuration screen disappeared. When I log back in via PuTTY, I get an Overlay error message. I can not get past it. I tried a forced logout but that didn't work. The phone display says "Awaiting Download". It's been like this for well over an hour. The message is:
"OVL0306
This overlay can not be active during Peripheral Software Download (PSDL).
1. Wait until PSDL is complete.
2. Use the SUSP command to suspend the PSDL and load the required program
(LD xx SUSP). Use SUSP with caution.
Severity: Info"

What is the best way to get out of this situation?

This is how you get out of it.

Details:
Unable to access any overlays on call server, OVL306 given on TTY. This was the result of a failed FDLU to an M3903 telset in my case, I suspect pertinent to all M3900 range of phones however.
After accessing load 32 by using the suspension command and an FWVU is run against the affected TN you get 'PSDL IS NOT IDLE' message
Fix:
Use the suspend command to access ld 32, use fdlc to cancel the suspended command, disable & enable the affected card and re-commence a subseqent FDLU.
This time, in my case, the download was successful.

OVL0306 This Overlay can not be active during Peripheral Software Download (PSDL).
Action: 1. Wait until PSDL is complete.
2. Use the SUSP command to suspend the PSDL and load the required program
(LD xx SUSP). Use SUSP with caution.
You may have to LD32 again after using the SUSP command to gain full access

This particular set in question was served of a Remote Gateway 9150 and it is possible that the set did not respond quick enough to the request for download in the first instance which caused the download to fail on first attempt.

Just an FYI, in the future- Only use the dumb terminal or a modem connection for the firmware downloads.

An INI will fix the PSDL issue if you are still having problems
