overlapping strokes

I am new to illustrator in certain areas but quit experienced in others. Recently I started to vector out a few cartoons. One problem I am having is when I have two strokes that have to go along the same path. I can't find a way to get the two strokes to overlap exactly. I tried to use the pathfinder toolbox but couldn't manage to get it done. Sorry, if my explanation isn't very clear.
 
...you will struggle to get that manually perfect...

...with the example you posted you can achieve in two steps with the pathfinder, ensure a curve is on top...

...for example, that top shape will have the curve in your picture, the bottom shape can be a straight top edge that covers the curve of the top object from underneath, like this:


...then select both objects, choose divide in the pathfinder, this will create three objects...

...deselect all and then select only the two top objects and combine them with the unite pathfinder command...

...once you have combined the two top objects it leaves you with only two objects, the curve will be perfectly aligned...
