Has anyone had any experience with the Overland REO 9100 or 9100c.. I"m wondering if the extra $10k for the compression model is worth it or not. Any other experiences or advice is also appreciated!

Thanks

I have had experience with other VTL's that use compression. You win space, but to keep your drives in streaming mode it sometimes becomes hard. For example , you have an LTO4 drive which requires 40 Mb/sec datafeed to keep in streaming mode. With Oracle or other databases, you can get really good compression ( 5:1 ) and higher, which will mean that you need a throughput of 200 Mb/sec single stream to keep your LTO going. If you do not get that, the drive will stop/start/stop/start ... which kills your tapedrive in the end.

rgds,

The above was related to exporting to physical tape,so if you're not going to do that, you're fine :) Then you have to calculate a bit how much the space you gain costs vs the 10k for the compression. Some data compresses well, some nearly not,so it depends a little on your data if you would benefit.
