I'm in the process of replacing a Toshiba Strata(model unknown) with a BCM 50. The customer requires overhead paging and aux ringer on incoming calls.
From what I can tell and according to the customer there is presently no external external amplifier attached to the Toshiba. My question is, Can I duplicate these features without the purchase of additional equipment?

Do they have overhead paging now?????
Do they have an AUX ringer now??????

yes they do. I figure they have a self amplified speaker. Can I just wire in the Aux ringer and paging port in series with the speaker and have it work?

For the paging, there must be a connection someplace to the paging Amp. it doesn't work by magic. same goes for the Aux ringer. trace the wires back to the system.

like i said, I think the amp is part of the speaker. My ultimate question is, can I wire the aux ringer and paging port in series with each other and make them both work properly through the amplified speaker?

If it is a self amplified speaker it shouldn't be a problem connecting the paging output.

I don't think it would be a good idea to have both the paging and aux ringer in series or parallel with a single speaker.

Are there multiple inputs on the existing speaker or is there currently a separate speaker for ringing and paging?

with the existing strata there is one output for both aux ring and paging

If you've only got self amplified speakers, you'll need some sort of tone generator for the aux ring that will take the contact closure and send the tone to the speakers. I think (been a looong time) that Toshiba systems have that built in - I could be wrong.

You'd just need to run the output of the page port to the speaker, and the output of the tone generator to the speaker and you're set to go.

Now your giving us info you didn't give us before, in that case I would try connecting the original connection to the BCM.

Must have remembered correctly then since theres just one output on the Toshiba. You'll need a tone generator to connect to the aux ring of the BCM - connect the output of the tone generator to the page speakers and away you go.

Thanks for the input biv343. Can you give me a product example of this "tone generator". I'm not familiar.

Thanks again

many thanks again
so if I understand correctly, the aux ringer output of the BCM would connect to input of the tone generator and both the output of the tone generator and the page output of the BCM would be wired into the speaker through some sort of bridged wiring arrangement.

Thats correct. Just connect the outputs of the page port and tone generator to the input of the horns. Worst that would happen is having a call come in while a page is in progress - you'd hear the tone coming in over top of the page.

biv343 many start thingies to you.
I purchased the Bogen box you suggested and after some brief wiring confusion with the schematic, it took off like a champ.

Many Thanks
Phil
