Over One Megabyte

Lately, whenever I have a file that's over one megabyte, it seems to linger in the Outbox for quite a while and most times I get a time-out message, and it doesn't get out at all. I usually end up sending it via a file transfer website. Wot's going on here? ... is there a setting I'm missing? Thank you.
