is there a way to...

when i add a new task and assign a resource to that task i would like some sort of auto detection that alerts when the newly added task takes that resource above 100%.

if that makes sense then well done you.

Try splitting the window (Window > Split)

In the top window display the Gantt Chart View

In the bottom window try the Resource Usage View or the Resource Graph view both of which can show over allocated resources as you asign resources to tasks in the Gantt Chart View
