Hi,
I have just looked in my folder, My Documents, which I do not use at all. and in that folder, there are over 1000 .IDX files, and a couple of .dat files.
I have no idea where they cam from, or what they are for. Each file is only about 30bytes
Think the amount of them is growing too...
anyone know what they are about? And can I delete them?

They could come from a number of places, tough to tell without some questions. It's name convention suggests data type and index type files.

I would first try to see whats in one of them to see if I can recognize what it is.

From windows explorer:
Click on any one .dat or .idx file to highlight only.
With shift key held down, right click the file.
Choose "Open with"
Pick wordpad or notepad

See if you can recognize anything in the file.

Much Luck

Do you use FOXPro or CMYK? These are 2 apps commonly associated with .IDX files. The .DAT files can be from almost anything. Wordperfect does occasionally write to DAT files, but many programs that use ASCII could have created them as well.

I just saw these files as well on my computer, did not get a chance to take a good look at them but they were also associated with a file called tdbidxl and autoexec.cam?
tried doing an internet search but nothing comes up, which seems to worry me more,or maybe i am just a moron. any help?

Idx files are audio files, kiddos. The purpose of these files are to hold the audiodata in a usable form, thus avoiding the conversion step.

AN IDX-file should be considered as an ordinary temporary file, the can safely be deleted to free up some space on the disc. The only drawback by this is, that the next time the corresponding file is opened, a new IDX-file has to be created

Strange, I've just had the same thing happen to my home machine (XP) and my work machine (98) - but I have found the link..

I have just installed, on both machines, Red Alert 2.

With over 1000 files, they only take up just over 1mb in disk space so no need to worry too much.
