OK, I have a weird one here...

Partner 7.0 system that has been in service for a couple years with no problems.

The system has 25 extensions, 4 outside lines, and NO voicemail at all.

This weekend, Outside line 2 started ringing for no reason. When they pick it up, no one is there, just a dial tone. They can make calls out on line 2, but as soon as they hang up, it starts ringing again.

When they hang up, it immediately starts ringing again. Caller ID works, but there is no one calling. It just keeps on ringing until they answer it, and there is no one there.

They finally disconnected Line 2 from the system just to stop the annoying ringing.

I tested the outside line with a butt set and everything works normal. But as soon as I plug it back into the Line 2 port on the system, it starts ringing again. I have monitored the traffic on line 2 and there is not a call coming in to cause the ringing.

So my thinking is there is something wrong, or there is some signalling issue with the phone company on line 2.

Now here is the weird part...

When I swap line 1 with line 2 (Connect line 1 to line 2 port and connect line 2 to line 1 port) everything works as it should. Calls come in and out normally.

I have swapped all 4 lines around and everything works normal, EXCEPT when the Line 2 cable is plugged into the LINE 2 port.

If I plug the LINE 2 cable into any other port it works fine.

I have power cycled the system, but I have not done an initialize, reload and restart. I have also replaced the line 2 cable from the port 2 to the outside line.

I am scratching my head on this one, any suggestions???

Thanks!

I'd try a system reset save all with line port 2 unplugged. Plug it in and see if it stills rings. It may need to be reset. weird it doesn't happen with another line plugged into it tough.

Yeah, line 2 CO port has gone bad. Plug the CO line into CO 5. Remove Line 2 from all phones, put Line 5 in its place.

Well that was my thinking as well that the Line Port 2 had gone bad...

BUT...

If I plug outside line 1 into Line port 2 jack, Line 2 works just fine and with outside line 2 plugged into the Line 1 Port Jack it works fine.

It is weird that by simply swapping the cables on line 1 and line 2 everything works.

That is what is so strange about this.

It is just and issue with outside line 2 plugged into Line 2 port.

My guess is that if you leave the lines swapped in the jacks, (Line 3 plugged into port 2, for example) then the phantom ringing will eventually begin on port 2. That's what usually happens in my experience. You may begin to get phantom ringing on other ports as well.

You could check for corrosion on the contacts in the port as well as on the modular connector, but that's a long shot.

did you check for AC voltage on the line Tip to Ring, also measure AC voltage Tip to Ground and AC voltage on Ring to ground as they might be different if both wires are influenced by the same problem.
It could be that there is some influence causing it but it should also cause it then on any other line port.
On the other hand it never hurts to check.
