Outlook XP clients cannot send mail through Exchange 5.5 server

Since installing Outlook XP on client computers who work off site, there has been a problem with sending mail through our Exchange 5.5 server. Users can download mail to their Outlook XP or Outlook Express clients but when sending mail, receive an error 550 relaying prohibited. Outlook 2000 and earlier clients did not have this trouble. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what solved the problem?
