Alright fellow experts, I need your help with this.

I have a PC at work that we are using Outlook XP on and it is using our exchange server to get the mail from. The problem we have is that when ever a file comes in named "evalform.doc" the following error message comes up "Cannot save attachment. Can't create file: evalform.doc. Right click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions on the folder."

This machine is running Win XP Pro, and the user is an admin user, so there should be no issues there. If we use web access the file opens fine, so it isn't on the exchange server that the problem is coming from. Also, the same file if renamed and then sent can be open just fine. Another thing is that the file that cannot be opened can be opened on any other machine and by other users on other machines. Along with not be able to view it, the same file name cannot be attached utilizing Outlook XP.

Things that we have tried include:
-checking permissions and options in Outlook
-deleting all files named evalform.doc on the HD
-reinstalling Outlook
-deleting all temp files and such on the machine
-compacting Outlook
-removing all rules setup
-checking security files in Outlook
-above things like renaming file and using other machines
-using web acces to retrieve the file.

So now I am at a loss at what else we can try or where to go, especially after the reinstall. I have searched Microsofts Knowledge base and have come up empty. I have searched google for hours, to find nothing. The alternative is to use another PC, but that won't help me fix the problem incase this ever comes up again.

Has anyone ever seen this or does anyone have a clue as to where to go?

Thanks in advance as you have always been able to help in the past.

Only this particular filename has this problem? All other .doc files open correctly? From the thoroughness of your post, my guess would be that other .doc's open fine.

This is a very strange condition. Will that exact file open correctly on the problem machine if copied there via floppy disc or still exhibit the same condition? If it works fine this way the problem is definately related to Outlook. The only thing that I can think of is to 'clear cache' in the Custom Forms options, just in case there is some hiccup with custom forms settings, but it seems unlikely.

I had exactly the same problem with Outlook XP running on Win XP Pro. The user had tried to highlight and print 150 emails (all with an attachment with the same name) and then got the same error message afterwards when trying to do anything with that particular attachment name.

The problem was located somewhere in her user profile (a roaming one on our domain). I didnt find the exact cause of the problem, but I found that deleting the locally stored profile and server profile then recreating it fixed the problem.

I found this thread today and I think I have fixed the problem. Basically I had a user with win XP pro and each time they recieved a scanned PDF from an HP 9100c lan scanner, Outlook could not save or open the PDF. The default name of the document was HP_9100c.pdf. I had the user rename the file on the scanner "testtest" or anything other than HP_9100c.pdf .

Then the 9100c would email the user and the attchment was named testtest. I right clicked and saved the document and opened it up with no issues.

Try renaming the file. There might be some issue with it remembering the same file name somewhere. Not sure but it worked for me.
