outlook wiped out after upgrade 1

I recently upraded my windows 98 system to windows xp pro. I perfomed a system backup and a backup of my personal files. The upgrade worked fine, but I found out that all my email messages and contacts in outlook were lost. I dont suppose this should happen; where did I go wrong and how can I recover the messages if possible?

Do you remember your previous Outlook version?
Could you tell use your new version?

Where you using a .PAB and not a .PST?

Bcastner can you help me here. I'm going to upgrade from 98se to XP pro and don't want to lose my 100+ contacts. What is my best bet to ensure this doesn't happen?

Thank you very much! Since my .pst file of 132MB, I will actually just take my outlook.pst and put it on my ftp for safe keeping (temporarily).
