Outlook Rules, where are they stored?

When you create an email rule in Microsoft Outlook 2003, is the rule stored locally on the client's machine or is it stored on the exchange server?

systemsadmin3000,

I do not have Xserver to check. These rules are stored locally in stand alone (obviously).

Create One , then search for it in both places. I would venture to say it is stored locally and applied when mail is connected to Xserver, as one could also setup OL to receive POP3mail which would not use a rule at the server.

I configured an exchange account on one computer and set up rules in outlook. I logged of that machine and went to another machine and logged on. I then reconfigured the same account on this machine and when I checked the rules that I set up on the previous machine have been applied to the new machine. So I guess the rule that I had setup initially was stored on the exchange server.

Thanks rvnguy.

systemsadmin3000,

Thanks for posting this result back. This is good information to know. From your explanation, I would assume that these settings are retained with your logon profile at the server and still not in the xchange server. But I could be wrong.

Actually this test account was not setup with a roaming profile in ADS.

Also what someone was telling me is that there are client side rules and server sides rule in outlook. I guess i have to do some research to find out which is which. But if this is the case then most probably the rule that I had set up was a server side rule.

Sounds similar to GPO's; Local or domain applied.

Guess I will have to set up a MS server just to keep current.

When you go to your rules wizard it should say right next to the rule whether it is a "client-only" rule.

Client side rules are normally stored in Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\outlook. The file is named OLprofilename.rwz.

Cheers.

When Outlook is operating in an Exchange server environment, all rules are stored on the Exchange server (in a hidden folder in the mailbox called Associated Messages). A copy is also retained local to the client in the rwz files as well.

All rules are server-side rules by default (and fire every time a message arrives in the mailbox regardless of whether there is an Outlook session connected to the mailbox or not) except when the rule would require the client to be logged in for the rule to fire correctly - an example of that would be a rule to move a certain message into a client-based PST file, for instance. Because the rule can't fire until the client logs in, the rule is deferred until the client is logged in, and hence is a client-side rule.

So the designation is regarding the environment they fire in, not the storage of the rules.
