Hi all,

If I send a message to X people, and found ive made a mistake and recall it. In some inboxes, people get a 'recall:' message after the original one - but it doesnt remove the original wrong message. So people can read that. Then they click on the recall message and the recall message and wrong original message go?

Any ideas?

Chris

The only way a delivered message can be recalled is with the recipient's permission. If you use Exchange and the recipient has his email open, then it is delivered almost instantaneously. If the recipient's mailbox is clicked, the message should be recalled with no permissions asked.

Even if its delivered, when the user clicks on it and it has to go to exchange to retrieve the content, shouldnt it then know the sender has recalled and issue a recalled mesage.

Im getting grief on this one! It would be handy to know on what scenarios a message would fail to recall and the user could read it. ive found a few articles but theyre not clear cut.

Cheers

I tell all my users to assume that recall won't work. It works ocassionally, but most of the time, it will only work if the recipient is out of the office and thus has their outlook closed. It is more useful to learn when NOT to hit the send button than it is to learn how to use recall. The problem is that delivery is instantaneous, and recall is usually started too late.

I know what you mean it is flakey, just going to look stupid by saying it doesnt work well to the boss but having no reason !

Just asked my colleague to close his outlook, i sent a msg and recalled it, waited 5 mins, asked him to open outlook. Both the normal and recall were in there and he could access the normal message fine.

Bummer...

C,

recalling a msg is very unreliable, there is so many options the functunality is depending on that we recommend not to use it.

Here is a offical MS summary on the recall option, use this as argumentation. What could be better than the producers own words:
SUMMARY
If you send a message by accident, you can attempt to recall the message from the recipients using Recall This Message on the Tools menu. The message recall feature allows you to recall, replace, or delete messages that you have sent.

Message Recall will not be successful if:

• The recipient is not using Outlook.
• The recipient is not logged on to the mail service provider.
• The message has been moved from the Inbox.
• The message has been read. This includes viewing the message with the Preview Pane so that the message is flagged as Read.
NOTE: The Message Recall feature is only available in the Corporate Workgroup option.

Cheers

Cheers for that Sebastian,

I think i can cut and paste enough comments from people saying its unreliable to put up a good argument!!

Its weird, i just dont see why if i send an email to Joe B and Joe leaves it in the inbox, no preview pane, without reading. Then i recall it 10 mins later, both messages are still there? hey ho - looks like im not going to be able to get to the bottom of this

Chris

C,

can you check the settings of Joe B? If so check:
Tool -> Options -> Registercard "Preferences" -> "E-mail Options" -> Tracking Options.

If "Process requests and responses on arrival" is not selected, it wont process your request to recall the mail without the user opening the recall msg first.

I already had my share with the recall option. Its diffucult to explain a user why there is an recall option when it is not really work.

Cheers

Cool thanks for that. Ill just wait till the boss is too stressed with anything else then tell her.....

Cheers for all the help mate
