How does everybody else handle this situation. Say your T-1 line goes down and you want to continue to use intercompany email. I know outlook uses dns to resolve the exchange server name. Well my dns is at my isp so if outlook uses DNS to resolve names how can i use outlook. Should I set up a DNS server inside my company for internal use? Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Hello,

You should have your own DNS, even if your ISP handles your Public DNS. You some how need to be able to resolve host names for your internal computers, whether you use WINS, DNS, Host file, ect.. This may not be an issue if you have a small network with one NETwork(segment). If you have more than one, you most likely will need DNS or WINs, unless you have a Multi-Home Server with routing enabled.

I use wins for name resolution on the internal network but the problem is that outlook will time out before it switches from the DNS to the WINS. How can i speed this up?

At some point in time u will need to use DNS. Now is a good time as any to install one. It makes life a lot easier if you have your own DNS for internal use and your ISP DNS for external resolution.

Hope this helps.

your local dns should be setup with the subnet. and should work independant of any outside influence. set up offline folders in OUTLOOK and you can run your intranet as if nothing happened and have access to all local users when you go to addresses
