Why is it our email use to be nice and fast but now it seems to take ages before I can open email?

We run Exchange 5.5 and an NT4 Server and the workstations are mixed operating systems win95, win98, win2k and XP

Seems to just sit there after highlighting a message to open? I have no idea why it started doing this hope someone can help.

Kind regards

Mike

That sounds like 2 issues: Mail Server too busy, or DNS issues.

If the problem just suddenly started, then I would say focus on your DNS, make sure it's working properly with the right settings. If the problem has been gradually getting worse, then take a look at your server performance.

One other possiblity, your being spammed and your server is really busy. I hope your server is closed to outside relay.

I had the same problem. I changed the client's LMHOSTS file to speed up the connection to the server.
My config is: FastEthernet, Exchange 5.5 on NT4, windows2000 and windowsXp clients with Outlook2000.
There is still some problem with WindowsXP+OutlookXP (slow to open) and I am traying to solve it.
I'll keep you posted.
Ciao,
Robert

Icsboi,

Windows XP and Outlook XP are much more dependant on DNS than Windows 2000 was. If your still having issues with them opening, it's DEFINATLY DNS issues. There are some posts about this that have gone by on how to fix this.

Reddlefty,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
I am looking either into the DNS details to discover errors and in the previous posts looking for some similar issues.

Ciao for now,
Robert

I've had the same issue with one of my XP machines. The problem was with Outlook XP, I removed it and installed Outlook 2000. It solved the problem.

FYI, At the end I found the solution.

The trouble was:

Slowness when opening/deleting e-mails but not when sending/receiving.
The trouble has occured into Windows2000 and WindowsXP and either using Outlook2000 and OutlookXP.
PCs and Office up to date with patches and SP4(w2k)-SP1(XP)

The problem wasn't related to the computer, because we tried to log-on within several Domains PCs, with the above different configuration.
However the problem has persisted.

Therefore the problem was the Account.

I disconnected the e-mail account from the NT account and then I've connected again and It works properly now.
