outlook on workgrouped NT4 server

Ever set up email (outlook or MSmessaging) on NT server that is in workgroup, not on domain?
Is it possible?

Email is desired route to send system messages informing recipients (who use PC on the domain) that a software critical event happened, application is down, etc.
