For years I have had an Outlook account with my job, but before I retired in May, I set up a new gmail account and started actively using it in January. I bought a laptop (running Windows 7 Home Premium)and setup the Outlook for the new gmail account. I would also like to be able to access the same gmail account on my home desktop computer.

Each time I try to set up the gmail account on the desktop and click the Send test message button, I get the error message: Task 'pop.gmail.com - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I matched window for window on both computers to match the settings. When logging into Outlook on the desktop (which runs Windows XP Service pack 3) I did get the message: "That account name has already been used. Please choose another name."

I am wondering why I can't have the same Outlook email account on more than one computer. Is this because both computers are hooked up to the cable modem?

Thanks for your help.

Daniel

Guess what? Your .pst file, where all your mail forlders reside is on...

your C: drive on PC A

and

your C: drive on PC B

When you download your mail in PC A, that goes on your PC A C: drive.

When you download your mail in PC B, that goes on your PC B C: drive.

and they don't 'talk' to each other, do they?

With 2 PC's you're better off using your gmail account without Outlook.

Skip,

Skip,

Thanks, for the useful info. I had come to the same conclusion but didn't understand the details.

For several years now I had used my desktop with the old email account I used prior to my retirement. I just thought it would be nice to have the same capabilities on both computers. I can access my gmail through the web. It is just so clunky!

If you ALWAYS have both PC's running as the same time could you pick have your .pst on PC A then direct PC B to use the .pst on PC A (I never tried this)?

If it works the only bad thing is you always need to start PC A first then wait a bit before starting PC B (kludgey to say the least)

I use Outlook on my main PC where I can save mail to a personal folder that also resides there.

I use my Verizon mail to view only on the other PC's but I'm careful not to delete any mail I wish to save from them; all my saving is done on the main PC.

That would be considered as using a .pst on a network drive which is not only unsupported by Microsoft but strongly advised against. Using network stored .psts can, and will over time, cause unrecoverable .pst corruption.

Hope this helps.

This may have become a moot point. I have started working part time at the job where I just retired, and I will be getting my old email address from them.

Thanks to all who responded,
