Outlook journal will not delete old entries

I have switched off the jounal from logging any items via tools/options. I have also set the auto-archive options to delete anything older than 1 day and to permanently delete the items. For some reason there are still over 15,000 items in the journal. It is not logging current items, they are all from last year sometime.

Can anyone help with removing these items as it does increase the size of mailboxes.
