outlook import contacts from LDAP oddity

We are a POP/SMTP shop and we are trying to deploy a centralized address book in our company by accessing the AD user account info via LDAP against one of our 2003 R2 DCs, but are seeing some odd behavior.

we are able to view the info via LDAP just fine. However when we try to add a user's info as a new contact in outlook, the window wont close properly.

When you choose the user you want to add and click the "add to contact" button a new contact window pops with the correct info. If you click "save and close" the save and close button greys out but then nothing happens. as soon as you close the LDAP address book entry however, the outlook contact window closes.

The same thing happens if you just highlight the user in the browse list and hit the icon to add. the button greys and wont close until the list of users is closed.

The only other oddity is after clicking save and close if you hit the red X to close the new outlook contact window, it will close both that window as well as the parent LDAP window. I assume this is what is supposed to happen when you click save and close.

Any ideas? Seems a bit odd to have to close the window manually.

I am sure the official M$ line is "Of course you cant, thats because that is a feature of Exchange. Upgrade and that will fix it." Sorry Mr. Gates, not in the budget.

Would installing an openLDAP server as a proxy for my users to query fix the issue? Or is this not a Microsoft/(lack of)exchange gotcha and it does it even on vanilla LDAP?
