Outlook hyperlinks are missing

Outlook has always worked well for my emails but for no apparent reason any hyperlink, like a website or a mailto link will now not show in the SENT message. Whilst in COMPOSE mode the hyperlinks are active but they become inactive when viewed in the SENT box and also are inactive for the email recipient. Changing from HTML mode to RICH TEXT doesn't help. Word is my default mail editor. have tried all sorts of settings to no avail.
Any ideas?
