I use WinME with Outlook Express 5 and IE 5.5.
Outlook Express stopped responding a few days ago. I click the icon to open the program, and nothing happens for around a minute. There is no disk activity and the computer functions normally (it doesnt freeze or crash). Then the OE splash screen will appear and load the prog. Then it works normally, untill I double click a message to open it in it's own window. Then again it will not responde for around 1 minute before finally loading the window. The address book also suffered from the same problem, but everything else on my comp worked fine.
Then little problems started cropping up on my system, which I linked to the problems with OE. So I formatted my computer... twice. Everything worked fine for a couple of days, then one day I turned on my computer, it got to the desktop (without the icons) and reset itself. Then it started back normally. Everything seemed fine untill I clicked the OE icon... and it had the EXACT same problem as before.
For some reason, I dont have the Internet Repair tool that other forum members have refered to. Also, I dont have a WinME disk (Microsoft made a dedicated partition on my HDD for restoring the OS, to stop people copying the disk) so I cant re-install OE.
Can anyone please help? It has gone beyond annoying!

I had several problems with IE5.5 The new IE6 solved several. They've revamped OE6 in it as well as a new address book arrangement. I shudder when I see people reformatting on a monthly basis. I could never ever do that because I have 2 years of artwork in mine. My suggestion would be to forget IE5.5 and move on to 6...When I did, the browser ran much faster and all OE problems were automatically solved.

I hate having to format too... I also have a lot of artwork that is important. Thankfully my ZIP disk helps a lot. I've never had to format my computer until this problem occured. I also follwed Microsoft Support article #Q235300 but to no avail. It made OE work fine for a little while, but didnt let me connect to the internet or use my graphics tablet. When I fixed those problems, OE broke down again.

If I didn't have to use OE, I'd definitely use Pegasus...It's light, fast (opens in 2 seconds), has a preview before downloading, and free. Once again, IE5.5 had lots of problems with OE. I'd either use Pegasus or upgrade to IE6 which comes with OE6.

Erase the folder and all files where outlook express resides on your hard disk AND THEN uninstall it from the add-remove programs section under control panel and then go to the windows update site and re-download the latest version and it will install itself and everything will be back to normal. I tried everything else that was suggested on the entire internet and this is all that worked.

Solution of Teshan's Problem postes On Jan26

I was facing the same problem. My problem started when I upgraded my W98 to W2K and same time upgraded ie5.5 to ie6(OE is the part of IE package). Now whenever I click on OE6 icon after a long minute my identity screen used to appear and after giving password again this took more than a minute to appear OE in reality. I tried unloading/loading of IE6, Defragment loading again IE5.5 but in vain. The solution is here,

However the detail does not tell anything about the same problem in OE6. But this works in case of OE6 also. Just do it and reply me on lalit@sterlite.com incase this is solved or otherwise.

Bye
